New Delhi: Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, the manufacturer of Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in India said that the imported vaccine dose will cost ₹ 995.40 in India. With a high efficiency rate of 91.6 percent, Sputnik V is the third vaccine to be approved for use in India.
As a part of the soft launch, the first dose of the vaccine was administered by Deepak Sapra, Global Head of Custom Pharma Services at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories in Hyderabad today. It is to be made available in the market from next week, said the Centre on Thursday. The decision came out after various states faced shortages in the availability of vaccines and thus had to cut out the dose program from people between the age of 18-45.
The price of the imported doses will include five percent Goods and Service Tax (GST) per dose. However, the Sputnik V doses made in India will be cheaper.
Sputnik V vaccine was cleared for emergency use in India in the month of April. After that, the first consignment of imported doses of the vaccine was received in May.
Dr. Reddy informed that more consignments of the imported doses are expected in the upcoming months. After that, the further supply of the Sputnik V vaccine will begin from Indian manufacturing partners.
As compared to the two Covid vaccines currently being administered in India, AstraZeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, Sputnik V has a higher efficacy rate of 91.6 percent.
Earlier, in a medical journal The Lancet, scientists were involved in a peer review of the vaccine and alleged the Sputnik V vaccine of having interim results from the phase 3 trial of the vaccine, raising concerns. However, these allegations were countered by the scientists of Russia making it clear that the regulatory standards for the provision of clinical trial data of the Sputnik V vaccine were clear and transparent.
Sputnik V is one of only three vaccines in the world after Pfizer and Moderna with such a high-efficiency rate of 91.6. The two-dose vaccine holds the maximum number of authorizations granted globally.
With a price less than $10 per dose internationally, more than 20 lakh people have been administered with its dose worldwide. The Sputnik vaccine is available in both liquid (stored at minus 18 degrees) and powder form (kept between two and eight degrees). The stability tests for the powder form are ongoing.
