On the occasion of Somvati Amavasya, lakhs of devotees have gathered at the Har Ki Pauri Ghat in Haridwar which is the site of ‘Shahi Snan’ to take a holy dip in the Ganges and pray to the sun god.
This comes when the country is witnessing a new wave of deadly coronavirus with daily cases reaching 2 lakh.
According to Kumbh Mela IG Sanjay Gunjyal, Police is making continuous efforts to maintain social distancing and covid-appropriate behaviour. He said “We are continuously making efforts to encourage people to follow Covid appropriate behaviour. But due to the huge crowd, it is practically not possible to issue challans today. It is very difficult to ensure social distancing at ghats,”
Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand Police is also using Artificial Intelligence enabled Cameras to zoom in and detect those who are not wearing masks.
According to the officials, over 350 CCTV Cameras have been installed at different location in the mela and 100 of them are equipped with sensors that generates an alert when the camera detects the image of a person without a mask.
Mukesh Thakur, Additional SP and in charge of Police Surveillance Control Room at Kumbh said, “When a site identified as vulnerable gets crowded beyond 75 per cent of its capacity, the control room gets an alert, at which point, entry of people to these sites will be immediately stopped,”
“A trial of these ALI enabled cameras equipped had already been done during the first “Shahi Snan” on March 11. Now it will be used during the whole Kumbh Mela period,” Mukesh Thakur said.
