India has just celebrated the achievement of building the tallest statue in the world. The Statue of Unity of one of the greatest freedom fighter of the country, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. The statue is also to honor India’s independence. The 182 meters long statue is said to be equal or more than twice of the statue of liberty. The man behind this accomplishment is the 93-years-old legendary sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar.
Ram Vanji Sutar’s life is truly dedicated to illustrating the sculptors. This artist is serving India as a sculptor for 70 years. He has given India about 8,000 sculptures including the statue of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. The statue of unity is situated at the Narmada district of Gujarat. It is situated in Sadhu bet near the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
The Legendary Sculptor has received the Padma Bhushan award and also the Padma Shri Award which is considered as the greatest honor of India. By the Union Ministry Of Culture, the Sutar has been nominated for the Tagore Award in the year 2016 which is also one of the greatest honor offered by India. After receiving the award, the artist will be prized with an amount of 1 crore rupees plus the citation in a roll.
Ram Vanji Sutar was born in the year 1925 in the Godur village of Dhule district, Maharashtra. He was a son of a carpenter. The artistry was in his blood. He developed his interest in sculpting since a very young age. Even as a child he used to draw on walls and developed his passion for being an artist soon.
Ram Vanji Sutar left his village and moved to Mumbai for further studies then he moved to Delhi for higher education. Meanwhile, he decided to work as a freelancer. He has not only worked for India but his statues are still making India proud in other countries like Italy, Russia, England, France, and Malaysia.
